AceShowbiz - Soulja Boy is taking a threat on TikTok seriously. After President Joe Biden signed into law a national security bill that could ban the application in the United States, the rapper noted that it's a big deal.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his frustration, the 33-year-old wrote, "I can't believe yall just gon let them ban TikTok like that And yall think it's funny." He warned, "If they do it to this app they can do it to any app or site. Not cool fr yall will see later."
In a follow-up tweet, Soulja stated, "How much yall want for TikTok? I'll buy it. @tiktok_us." While ByteDance, a Chinese internet company which owns TikTok, doesn't have any intention to sell the platform, many have fanned the rapper to make it happen and save the application.
"It's around 50 billion but s**t I know Draco could make it happen," one person responded to his second tweet. A second user stated, "Soulja boy bouta be the first rapper to buy a social media platform." A third, meanwhile, pleaded, "soulja boy is the only rapper that can afford it please save tiktok." Another, however, reminded, "Baby, the man that owns it said it's not for sale."
On Wednesday, April 24, President Biden signed into law a national security bill that would force TikTok to be sold by its owner, ByteDance, or face a possible ban in the United States. The legislation gives ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok, with a possible three-month extension if a sale is in progress. It would also keep ByteDance from controlling TikTok's algorithm, which is credited with helping the app rocket in popularity.
Responding to the bill, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said in a video, "Make no mistake, this is a ban, a ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice. Politicians may say otherwise. But don't get confused. Many who sponsored the bill admit a TikTok ban is their ultimate goal."
"It's actually a disappointing moment, but it does not need to be a defining one. It's actually ironic because the freedom of expression on TikTok reflects the same American values that make the United States a beacon of freedom," he continued. "TikTok gives everyday Americans a powerful way to be seen and heard."
Chew, however, assured everyone that "we aren't going anywhere." He insisted, "We are confident, and we will keep fighting for your rights in the courts. The facts and the Constitution are on our side and we expect to prevail."
"You'll still be able to enjoy TikTok like you always have," the Harvard graduate added. "In fact, if you have a story about how TikTok impacts your life, we would love for you to share it to showcase exactly what we're fighting for."
